What determines midnight movie showings at theaters?

Most of the time it's because it's a movie with an audience that follows it...like Rocky Horror, at which fans of it say every single word of the movie as it plays.

Another factor would be the particular theatre and it's owner, clientele, and location.

The third factor would be XXX movies for reasons I don't want to know about...lol.

What really determines a midnight showing is the demand for one. I work at a theater and midnight showings are almost always at the disretion of the owner. The reason they are midnight showings is the movie companies do not want the film shown early. Most theaters get the film 2-3 days in advance to set up and screen for print quality. A theater could run a midnight show of something like Just My Luck but that would not do nearly the business of something like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. The all mighty dollar determines a midnight show in the end.
